You may not think that looking at a quilt could tell you so much about the past – and about yourself.
But that is just what happens when you get close up to the never-before-seen, centuries-old quilts at the Museum in the exhibit Patterns from the Past: 19th-Century American Quilts. Check it out before the exhibit closes August 5.
The quilts date back to the Revolution and Civil War eras, and reveal a lot about women in a time when they weren't free to express their views openly.
Quilts this old are not often shown, because they are just too fragile.
Some reflect the prosperous era with eagles, shafts of wheat, grapes and ribbons. Economic booms mean houses get fancier. Think mansion, not “McMansion.” We’re talking Scarlett O’Hara stuff here, with bigger beds and more elegant quilts.
Get lost in imagining yourself in Victorian times. Then, realize that quilts symbolize undying truths.
Whether you lived then or now, some things you just can’t control, like the weather, housing prices and the stock market.
You have to do the best you can with what you've got. The material passed on to you, or what you can afford – that’s your fate.
In life, as in quilts, what you make of it is up to you.
Come to the Museum, and get inspired.
