Trees Inspire Learning, Discovery, Creativity!

Here at the Museum we know that you're never too young – or too old – to be inspired by nature, culture and play.
Our Backpack Explorers program lets children ages three and four engage all of their senses as they explore on their own as well as with the help of a parent or educator. This program supports the Museum’s mission of inspiring even our earliest learners to become good stewards of High Desert nature and culture.
Children embark on their sensory-filled learning journeys by donning backpacks filled with owl egg replicas, real otter fur, Native American tools, clothing and other real and replicated artifacts. They visit science, art and body movement stations at areas throughout the Museum related to a monthly theme about High Desert animals and nature.
It was developed by Linda Rhine, the Museum’s curator of education programs, an expert in the field of early childhood education.
“This program is developmentally appropriate because it provides free-choice learning for young children, and gives them the opportunity to be creative through art and science – to touch real things like raptor feathers and skulls,” said Rhine. “For all ages, especially for young children, play is a really an important factor, and Backpack Explorers gives children the opportunity to play while learning about nature, science, culture or themselves.”
